My name is Magda Stoffberg and I’m the owner and founder of REALGLEN Properties. I’ve been involved in the East Rand property market for more than two decades, and my career has always felt more like a calling than a job to me. As we wrap up Women’s Month 2026, I’d like to share the story of my journey in the real estate industry.
The property industry isn’t about bricks and mortar. It’s about people – and every home and every family has a unique story. Thanks to the trust that every client has placed in me over the years, I have had the privilege of playing a role and making a difference in these stories.
How REALGLEN Properties became a reality
After spending many years with a national franchise, I realised that I wanted to build a business that reflected my own values. I wanted to create a company in which integrity, personal service and long-term relationships would always be more important than sales targets. REALGLEN Properties opened its doors in 2009, and I’m still actively involved in every aspect of the business.
Before launching REALGLEN Properties, I was a very successful franchisee with RealNet Properties and was named National Sales Agent of the Year twice, as well as National Rental Agent of the Year for five consecutive years. That foundation gave me the tools and knowledge that I needed to provide both solid real estate expertise and the personal touch.
From helping first-time buyers and investors to managing rental portfolios and supporting landlords, it’s all in a day’s work for me. My experience has confirmed my initial instinct: if you treat people fairly and honestly, they will come back to you time and time again.
The greatest highlight over the years has been building long-term relationships with clients who have become friends over the years. Running my own business has also taught me resilience. Markets change and challenges arise, but honesty, perseverance and consistency have always been my guiding lights.
Changes in the real estate sphere
The biggest change I’ve seen during my time in the industry is the amount of information available to buyers. Technology has undoubtedly transformed the way we market properties, but it has not replaced the importance of good advice. Buyers are more cautious, banks have stricter lending criteria and affordability has become a major consideration. People are asking more questions before they make decisions – and this is a positive development.
While some things change, others stay the same, and buying or renting a home is often one of the biggest decisions that people make. The aspect of the industry that I love the most is being trusted to guide someone through that process. Every successful outcome reminds me why I love what I do.
Advice for people buying property
The most important advice I can give any buyer – whether you’re buying for the first time or if you’re a seasoned investor – is to take your time and ask questions. Don’t be afraid of asking for explanations about anything and avoid falling in love with a property until you’ve looked at the bigger picture. Consider the property’s location and position, affordability and your long-term needs. Remember that while a home can be renovated, its location cannot be changed. Perhaps most importantly of all, buy within your means so that you can enjoy your new home without unnecessary financial pressure.
Lessons learnt over the years
The most important lesson I’ve learnt over the years is that success doesn’t happen overnight – and this is the most important message I’d like to impart to women dreaming of opening their own business. It comes from working hard, treating people well and never compromising your integrity. Your reputation is your greatest asset, so protect it every day. Success is not measured by the number of sales you make, but by the number of people who trust you enough to use your services again or recommend you to others.
Property is never just about bricks and mortar. It’s about families, dreams and building a future. When you’re looking to buy a property, seek good advice, think long term and work with professionals who you trust.
